Take the traditional New England contra dance combination of fiddle and piano. Add accordion and hand drums, and you have an entrancing, rhythmic sound with jazzy flair. That’s what the Wild Ones will bring to FOOTMAD’s next old-time dance.
Fiddler Paul Epstein is probably best known as the fiddler with the popular contra dance band the Contrarians, who have played dances from New York to Georgia and throughout the Midwest and opened FOOTMAD’s 2018-2019 dance season last September. Paul is a versatile musician and prolific writer of songs and tunes, with three CDs of his own and two with the Contrarians.
Rita Ray (piano/keyboard) played her first public dance in 2005 and has been expanding her repertoire ever since. Paula Bickham took up accordion when she lived in Cajun country, and for 20 years has focused on hand-drumming and rhythms from West Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. With their fusion of traditional and world styles, the Wild Ones will make you want to keep dancing.
Our caller is Adriane Mohlenkamp from Athens, Ohio. Adriane, who is making her FOOTMAD debut, has been dancing since 2000, and calling since 2003. Adriane is a patient teacher with a repertoire for dancers at all levels.
